PAL is pleased to present its latest fundraising event, “Casual for a Cause,” a dress-down day in which all proceeds directly support Philadelphia’s youth. Participants in this fundraiser simply donate $5-$10 to PAL, which then allows them to dress in casual attire on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at their respective places of business. February is “PAL Month” in Philadelphia, and this new fundraiser will be one of its highlights.
PAL needs your help! Please take advantage of this effortless opportunity and implement Casual For A Cause in your office. The PAL Development Team will provide you with materials including fliers, buttons for participants, e-mail templates to send to your colleagues and PAL fact sheets to ensure that this process is as simple and successful as possible. Participating companies can set the giving level anywhere from $5 to $10 based on past involvement in other organizations’ dress-down days and firm culture. Any feedback is welcome, as this process aims to be as easy and successful as possible.
There is still time to sign up for this event! Please contact Jo Elkes at 215-291-9000 ext. 115 or jelkes@phillypal.com to confirm your company’s participation in this event.
PAL was the most focal point of my formative years in growing up in West Philadelphia. It was during the 1960′s, and gang rivalry was running rampant. As children in an urban environment, we faced these issues on the streets, and some of us also lived in single-parent households. PAL was a home away from home for me, and Officer Drummond served as another father figure to many of the kids in the neighborhood.
We looked up to Officer Drummond as our confidant. He taught us how to overcome our problems, whether they were in school or in our home lives. He also introduced an art that we had never heard of – ceramics. It was really cool going to PAL on Saturday afternoons and getting our hands all messy with clay. We tried our best to do pottery and were able to see the finished products the following week. It was so exciting to go home and show our mothers what we had made for them!
When I was in the eighth grade at St. Carthage School., located at 63rd and Cedar Avenue, Officer Drummond came to my classroom to present me with a plaque in front of my peers. The award acknowledged my “outstanding achievements as a young adult member of my community.” To this day, I still have the plaque on the wall in my TV room.
I was also presented with the award on the “Ed Hurst Show.” This was the most exciting accomplishment that I received on my own — for Officer Drummond to think that much of me, (with the added fame of being honored on TV) really lifted my self-esteem.
Thank you to Officer Drummond and PAL for playing such an important part in the making of the woman I am today!
PAL’s Media Thanks Highlight Reel, Created by Fusion Brand Experiences
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Jan. 19, 2011– The Police Athletic League of Philadelphia held its annual Sponsor & Media Appreciation Luncheon yesterday, at the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue. More than 200 PAL sponsors, media friends and Board members braved the icy weather and enjoyed a wonderful lunch and a terrific program, which was hosted by Phillies’ Director of Public Affairs, Scott Palmer. The eventful afternoon was highlighted by the much-anticipated announcement of the 2011 PAL Annual Award Dinner Honorees.
The 2011 Award Dinner Honorees are a special group, who will be recognized for their remarkable dedication to PAL and for leadership at their respective organizations, each of which are pillars of community philanthropy. This year, PAL will be honoring Ruben Amaro, Jr., Senior Vice President & General Manager of the Phillies; Daniel Hilferty, President and CEO of Independence Blue Cross; and Jeffrey Scarpello, Esq., Executive Director of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), Penn-Del-Jersey.
In addition to the Honoree reveal, the Sally Berlin PAL Spotlight Award was given to Gene Castellano. Castellano, a long time Board member and current PR Committee Chair, is the Vice President for Marketing & Communications at Cabrini College. Over the years, Castellano has made it his mission to ensure that PAL receives proper media attention and has gone above and beyond the call of duty, exceeding expectations in his role as PR Committee Chair.
Attendees were also treated to dynamic guest speakers, including the Phillies’ Scott Franzke and West Oak Lane PAL Alumna Paulette Brown. Brown’s tear-jerking recollection of her experiences at PAL captured the audience’s attention and painted a vivid picture of PAL’s effects on the communities it serves. Brown, now 28, grew up in a single-parent family and enrolled in PAL at the age of 12 with her two younger sisters. Through the guidance of her PAL Center Director, Police Officer Steve Brennan, Brown overcame the challenges of growing up in the inner city, and has enjoyed great successes, both at PAL and in everyday life. When speaking about Brennan, Brown had fond memories of a strong friendship that began in her childhood: “He’s one of my biggest inspirations. He’s the best person I’ve ever met.”
Overall, the event was a massive success. PAL thanks its sponsor and media friends for their dedication to furthering PAL’s mission of “Cops Helping Kids,” and in assisting in significantly promoting PAL throughout 2010.

Congratulations to all of the teams that participated in Wissinoming PAL’s first-ever season of Flag Football! The season is over and a champion has been crowned.
At the culmination of the playoffs, two deserving teams were left standing. The championship, which was dubbed WissBowl I, hosted the heavy favorite, dominant Cowboys and the never-say-die, tenacious Jets. Both teams that competed in this fun, friendly match played their hearts out and truly deserved to compete in this championship game. In a shocking upset, the Jets edged out the league-leading Cowboys and were crowned WissBowl I Champions.
What makes the outcome of this championship game even more interesting is that the Jets’ win keeps a somewhat unusual streak going; some call it the “First Place Jinx”. No team that has finished in first place at Wissinoming PAL has ever won a championship!
Overall, the Wissinoming PAL Flag Football League was a huge success! Over 80 youth participated in the program, which ran from November to January 5th. As with all things PAL, despite the Jets being league champions, all of the youngsters who participated were winners for their efforts and sportsmanship.
PHILADELPHIA, PA – January 3, 2010 – So far, this winter has been nothing short of frigid. Along with the cold temperatures, though, comes the soothing feeling of warm-hearted generosity. Charming Shoppes, Inc., which owns and operates a variety of popular clothing stores throughout 48 states, donated 3,000 winter coats to the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia through their “Keeping Kids Warm” program. Overall, the program has donated over 150,000 winter coats in 75 communities across the United States with 10,000 coats donated this year.
On December 22, 2010, Police officers, members of PAL’s civilian staff and a volunteer from the Cozen PAL Center unloaded more than 600 boxes from an oversized tractor-trailer. Local community members and neighbors of the Cozen PAL center watched as the boxes were taken off the truck, passed down the chain of people and placed in the PAL center. After a few hours, boxes lined the walls of the center and were separated into girls, boys, men and women.
The coats were then divided among PAL centers and picked up the following day. PAL officers distributed the coats to the youngsters at their centers who were most in need of a new coat. Thanks to Charming Shoppes, the winter will now be warmer for PAL’s youth!
